CLASSIFICATION OF ADRENERGIC DRUGS

Adrenergic drugs

Adrenergic drugs, also known as sympathomimetic drugs. These are a class of medications that activate the sympathetic nervous system. These drugs mimic the effects of the neurotransmitters norepinephrine and epinephrine, which are released by the adrenal glands in response to stress or danger. Adrenergic drugs are used to treat a variety of medical conditions, including asthma, allergies, high blood pressure, and heart failure.

Some common examples of adrenergic drugs include:

1. Epinephrine: This drug is used to treat severe allergic reactions, asthma attacks, and cardiac arrest. It works by constricting blood vessels and opening up the airways.
2. Albuterol: This medication is a bronchodilator, meaning it relaxes the muscles in the airways to improve breathing. It is commonly used to treat asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
3. Dopamine: This drug is used to treat low blood pressure and shock. It works by increasing heart rate and blood pressure.
4. Pseudoephedrine: This medication is a decongestant that is used to relieve nasal congestion due to allergies or the common cold. It works by narrowing blood vessels in the nasal passages.
5. Phenylephrine: This drug is also a decongestant that is used to relieve nasal congestion. It works by constricting blood vessels in the nasal passages.
6. Clonidine: This medication is used to treat high blood pressure. It works by reducing the activity of the sympathetic nervous system, which can cause blood vessels to relax and blood pressure to decrease.
7. Isoproterenol: This medication is a bronchodilator and is also used to treat bradycardia (low heart rate) and cardiac arrest. It works by increasing heart rate and opening up the airways.

2. Bronchodilators-Salbutamol (Albuterol), Isoprenaline,  Terbutaline, Salmeterol, Formoterol, Bambuterol
3. CNS stimulants-Amphetamine, Dexamphetamine, Methamphetamine, Methylphenidate
4. Uterine relaxants-Ritodrine, Isoxsuprine, Salbutamol, Terbutaline
5. Cardiac stimulants-Adrenaline, Isoprenaline, Dobutamine,
6. Nasal decongestants-Xylometazoline, Oxymetazoline, Naphazoline, Phenylephrine, Phenylpropanolamine, Pseudoephedrine
7. Anorectics-Amphetamine, Fenfluramine, Dexfenfluramine, Sibutramine
