📘

Current Blueprint

Built for the current CSCS outline in use for exams administered on or after July 1, 2025.

🎥

Practical Item Ready

Section 2 includes video/image-style reasoning, technique, testing, and coaching decisions.

🎯

Weak-Area Drills

Use section-specific quizzes to fix program design, technique, science, nutrition, and admin mistakes fast.

💡 How to use: Start with CSCS Practice Test 1 for a baseline, then rotate into your weakest domain quiz. The current CSCS outline renamed the old Testing, Ongoing Monitoring, and Data Evaluation area to Program Implementation, so the Testing & Evaluation quiz on this page is mapped to that current domain.

Passing Score & How Scoring Works

Scaled scoring, section pass rules, and what your practice scores should look like.

70Scaled Pass

To pass an NSCA certification exam, you need a scaled score of 70 or higher. For the CSCS, you must pass both sections and complete all eligibility requirements. The NSCA reports a raw score and a scaled score; scaled scoring helps keep the passing standard consistent across different exam forms.

ℹ️Important: First-time CSCS candidates take both sections. If you fail only one section, you may retake just that section, but it must be passed within one year of your initial exam date.
How Non-Scored Items Work

The CSCS exam includes 15 non-scored questions in each section. These items are pretested for future exam use and do not affect your pass/fail result, but they are mixed throughout the exam and are not labeled.

Safe Practice Target

For 30-question mixed sets, aim to score 23 to 25 correct consistently. That range shows you are not just memorizing one area, but performing reliably across both sections and the newer blueprint wording.

Eligibility Requirements

What you need to sit for the CSCS exam and what changes are coming.

  • Hold a bachelor’s degree or higher, or be currently enrolled as a college senior at an accredited institution
  • Have a current CPR/AED certification
  • Register through the NSCA and schedule with Pearson VUE within the 120-day testing window
  • Pass both exam sections and satisfy all documentation requirements for certification to be awarded
  • Be aware of the future U.S. degree change: starting January 1, 2030, U.S. candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree from a CASCE-accredited program
Common Eligibility Questions
Yes. The NSCA allows currently enrolled college seniors at accredited institutions to sit for the CSCS exam. However, proof of degree still must be provided before the credential is granted.
Not under the current rules in effect through December 31, 2029. Right now the requirement is a bachelor’s degree or higher, plus CPR/AED. A program-specific CASCE accreditation requirement begins for U.S. candidates on January 1, 2030.
Yes, current CPR/AED certification is a stated prerequisite for the CSCS exam, and it also remains part of maintaining certification after you pass.
Once registered, you have a 120-day window to schedule and complete the exam with Pearson VUE.

Question Types & How to Answer

The CSCS is mostly one-best-answer multiple choice, but many misses happen because candidates read the scenario too fast.

📘 Science Recall + Application

Section 1 mixes basic knowledge with applied exercise science. Know the concept, but also know how the concept changes programming, performance, or recovery decisions.

🎥 Video / Image-Based Technique Items

Section 2 includes 30-40 video and/or image items. Focus on movement quality, body position, bar path, safety, and the coaching cue that best fixes the problem.

📊 Program / Testing Decisions

Many questions ask for the best training prescription, test selection, or interpretation step. Match the answer to the athlete’s goal, sport demands, and current status before choosing.

The 3-Step Answer Framework
01

Find the Domain

Is this science, design, technique, implementation, or administration?

02

Read the Athlete Context

Sport, goal, training phase, safety constraints, and performance demand

03

Pick the Best Fit

Choose the answer that is most evidence-based, safe, and specific to the athlete’s need

⚠️

Common Mistakes & Exam Traps

These are the patterns that cause avoidable CSCS misses.

📉

Using the wrong training adaptation target

Many distractors are built around near-miss prescriptions. If the athlete needs power, do not choose a hypertrophy-style answer just because the exercise looks familiar.

🏟️

Ignoring the sport and phase of training

The best answer changes with the competitive calendar, sport demands, injury history, and training age. Context matters more than memorized rules alone.

🚫

Forgetting scope-of-practice boundaries

Nutrition and mental health questions often test when to educate within scope and when to refer out. The most confident-sounding option is not always the legal or ethical one.

🎥

Rushing video/image items

Watch for body alignment, setup, spotting, and the exact phase of movement being tested. One missed visual detail can flip the answer.

Frequently Asked Questions

The most common CSCS questions, answered in a schema-ready Q/A format.

The CSCS exam has 220 total questions: 95 in Scientific Foundations and 125 in Practical/Applied. Of those, 190 are scored and 30 are non-scored pretest items.
The total testing time is four hours. Section 1 is 1.5 hours, and Section 2 is 2.5 hours.
You need a scaled score of 70 or higher. Because the CSCS has two sections, you must pass both sections to earn the credential.
Yes. If you pass one section and fail the other, you only need to retake the failed section. That failed section must be retaken and passed within one year of your initial exam date.
No. The CSCS is administered through Pearson VUE test centers. NSCA states that live remote proctoring through OnVUE is only available for the TSAC-F exam, not CSCS.
The current detailed content outline became effective July 1, 2025. One important change is that the old Testing, Ongoing Monitoring, and Data Evaluation area is now named Program Implementation, and coaching-athlete-through-session tasks were added.
Yes. Currently enrolled college seniors at accredited institutions may sit for the exam, but the credential is not awarded until degree requirements are completed and verified.
The CSCS recertifies on a three-year cycle. You must maintain CPR/AED, complete the required CEUs for your certification date and cycle, report them, and pay the recertification fee by the deadline.
