CSPT Exam Snapshot
The CSPT is an advanced PTCB credential for technicians working in sterile compounding. Here are the key facts before you apply.
| Total Questions | 75 multiple-choice questions |
|---|---|
| Scoring Pattern | 60 scored + 15 unscored pretest questions. You won't know which are unscored, so treat every question seriously. |
| Total Time | 2 hours total appointment (about 1 hr 50 min of testing time) |
| Passing Score | 1400 scaled (range 1000โ1600) |
| Format | Computer-based testing at Pearson VUE test centers |
| Prerequisite | An active PTCB CPhT (or qualifying certification) plus the required sterile-compounding work experience |
Retake Policy
If you don't pass on your first try, you can retake the CSPT — but plan around these rules:
- You may attempt the exam up to two times within a 12-month eligibility window; further attempts require a new application.
- A waiting period applies between attempts before you can re-test.
- An exam fee applies to every attempt.
- After repeated unsuccessful attempts, additional study or remediation is strongly recommended before re-testing.
The Four Knowledge Domains
The CSPT is weighted across four domains. Spend your study time in proportion to the blueprint โ Sterile Compounding Procedures dominates the exam.
| Domain | Weight | Key topics |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Sterile Compounding Procedures | 53% | Aseptic technique, CSP preparation, calculations, sterilization methods, and beyond-use dating. |
| 2. Facilities & Equipment | 22% | ISO classifications, primary/secondary engineering controls, airflow, cleaning, and certification. |
| 3. Medications & Components | 17% | Ingredient selection, stability, compatibility, and appropriate containers and components. |
| 4. Handling, Packaging, Storage & Disposal | 8% | Labeling, packaging, storage, transport, and safe disposal of compounded sterile preparations. |
Sterile Compounding Quick Facts
Memorize these essentials โ they show up again and again on the CSPT.
- Flow rate = total volume (mL) รท time (hr)
- Drip rate = (mL ร drop factor) รท time (min)
- 1 g = 1,000 mg = 1,000,000 mcg
- % strength (w/v) = g of drug per 100 mL
- 1:1,000 = 1 g in 1,000 mL
- ISO Class 5 = cleanest air; where CSPs are made (PEC)
- First air = never interrupt airflow to the CSP
- Work zone = at least 6 inches inside the hood
Train on the free sets, then prove it on a full exam
