What is the MPJE?
The Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination (MPJE) is a standardized test used by most state boards of pharmacy to assess a candidate’s competency in pharmacy law. It combines federal and state-specific questions to ensure pharmacists can practice safely and legally.
MPJE Exam Format
- Duration: 2.5 Hours.
- Questions: 120 Questions (100 scored, 20 pre-test).
- Format: Computerized Adaptive Testing (CAT).
- Passing Score: Scaled score of 75.
Key Competency Areas (The Blueprint)
The NABP divides the exam into three major areas:
Area 1: Pharmacy Practice (Approx. 83%)
This is the core of the exam. It covers the legal requirements for:
- Prescription Validity: What makes a prescription legal? (e.g., C-II expiration dates, refill limits).
- Dispensing: Labeling requirements, safety caps (PPPA), and patient counseling.
- Controlled Substances: Ordering (DEA 222), Inventory, Theft reporting (DEA 106), and Disposal (DEA 41).
- PDMP: State specific Prescription Drug Monitoring Program reporting requirements.
Area 2: Licensure & Personnel (Approx. 15%)
Focuses on the people and facilities involved in pharmacy:
- Pharmacist Duties: CE requirements, license renewal, and Pharmacist-in-Charge (PIC) responsibilities.
- Technicians & Interns: Registration requirements, scope of practice, and maximum supervision ratios.
- Facility: Physical security, alarm systems, and record retention.
The "Stricter Law" Rule
A fundamental principle for the MPJE is the Stricter Law Rule. When Federal law and State law conflict, you must follow the one that is stricter (more restrictive).
Example: Federal law allows C-II prescriptions to be valid indefinitely (no expiration), but Texas law expires them in 21 days. In Texas, you follow the 21-day rule.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the MPJE the same for every state?
No. While the format is the same, the content is unique to each state. About 50-60% of questions may be based on federal law (which is constant), but the remaining questions test specific state statutes and board rules.
Can I go back to previous questions on the MPJE?
No. The MPJE is adaptive. Once you submit an answer, you cannot return to change it. You must answer every question presented.
What happens if I fail?
You must wait 30 days before retaking the exam for the same jurisdiction. You are limited to 5 attempts per jurisdiction.
