Dissolution & Disintegration Profile Plotter

Input time vs. % drug release data to visualize the dissolution or disintegration profile of a dosage form. The tool automatically calculates and annotates key kinetic markers like T₅₀ and T₉₀.

Data Entry iWhat is a dissolution profile?
A plot of the cumulative amount of drug dissolved from a dosage form over time. It's crucial for predicting in-vivo performance and ensuring product quality.

Time (min) % Response

Profile Analysis

T₅₀ iThe time required for 50% of the drug to be dissolved or released. It's an indicator of the drug's release rate.

0 min

T₉₀ iThe time required for 90% of the drug to be dissolved or released. This often signifies that the majority of the drug is available for absorption.

0 min

Tablet Disintegration & Dissolution Profile Plotter

Monitoring and analyzing the disintegration or dissolution behavior of a tablet is critical in pharmaceutical formulation, bioavailability studies, and regulatory compliance. The Tablet Disintegration & Dissolution Profile Plotter tool provides a real-time, interactive way to chart and interpret dissolution data using just time and percentage values. Whether you’re formulating immediate-release or extended-release tablets, this calculator helps visualize drug release kinetics and identify key performance metrics.

About the Tool

This plotter is designed for B.Pharm, M.Pharm, and pharmaceutical R&D professionals who need a fast, intuitive way to analyze tablet performance data. With a responsive interface and educational annotations, the tool offers clear kinetic insights in both lab and classroom settings.

You can either manually enter time–response data or upload it via CSV. The tool then plots the dissolution/disintegration profile and automatically calculates and displays important markers like T₅₀, T₉₀, Max % release, and disintegration time.

Key Features

1. Manual Data Entry and CSV Upload

You can input data in two ways:

  • Manual Table Entry: Enter the Time (in minutes) and the corresponding % Disintegrated or Dissolved directly into the editable table.

  • CSV Upload: Upload a CSV file with two columns (first: time, second: % response). This is ideal for larger datasets obtained from dissolution testing instruments.

Tip: Ensure your CSV is clean and numerical (no headers or units in cells).

2. Preset Templates for Faster Use

Click on preset options like:

  • Immediate-Release (IR) Template

  • Extended-Release (ER) Template

These pre-filled profiles help you quickly generate standard curves to test or demonstrate the tool, especially in teaching environments.

3. Interactive Curve Plotting

Click “Plot Profile” to visualize your entered data. The tool uses a smooth line curve (interpolated where appropriate) and displays the following automatically:

  • T₅₀ (Time to 50% release)

  • T₉₀ (Time to 90% release)

  • Maximum Response (%)

  • Disintegration Time (Time at which % crosses 80% or sharp inflection point—customizable soon)

These markers are annotated on the graph with easy-to-read labels.

4. Chart Visualization (Chart.js)

The plotted graph uses Chart.js and is fully responsive:

  • Tablet/mobile-friendly display

  • Auto-rescaling

  • Tooltip popups for each data point

  • Color-coded curve for fast interpretation

It makes it easy to track how quickly and how much of the drug is released, which is critical for formulation quality and patient outcomes.

5. Export Options

Once your profile is plotted:

  • Click Export to PNG to download the chart as a high-resolution image

  • Click Export to PDF to download the full table + graph + summary metrics

This is especially helpful for:

  • Lab reports

  • Assignments

  • Regulatory documentation

  • Presentation slides

6. Educational Tooltips and Safe Ranges

Every input field and output is accompanied by a tooltip. Hover over the “ℹ️” icons to get:

  • Definitions of T₅₀, T₉₀, and disintegration time

  • The difference between IR and ER curves

  • The ideal ranges of time points (e.g., typical IR T₅₀ < 15 min)

How to Use the Plotter

Step 1:
Enter time values (in minutes) and % response (0–100%) in the table. You can add more rows by clicking “+ Add Row”.

Step 2 (optional):
Use the CSV upload feature if you already have test data saved in Excel/CSV format.

Step 3 (optional):
Use a preset template (Immediate-Release or Extended-Release) to load typical test data instantly.

Step 4:
Click Plot Profile.

Step 5:
Interpret the plotted curve. You will see:

  • The curve with data points

  • Key kinetic markers: T₅₀, T₉₀, Max %, Disintegration Time

  • A tooltip-enabled graph with clear axis scaling

Step 6:
Click “Export PNG” or “Export PDF” to download your results.

Why Dissolution Profiles Matter

In pharmaceutical sciences, the dissolution curve reflects how a drug releases into the body. It directly impacts:

  • Bioavailability: Drugs must dissolve before they can be absorbed.

  • Formulation Type: IR, ER, or delayed-release dosage forms have different curves.

  • Regulatory Compliance: FDA and USP guidelines mandate dissolution testing for product approval.

  • Batch Quality: A deviation in dissolution profile may indicate formulation failure or manufacturing defect.

This tool helps you assess these factors clearly.

Typical Kinetic Markers Explained

T₅₀ (Time to 50% Dissolution)

  • Indicates how quickly half the drug dissolves.

  • Shorter T₅₀ → faster onset of action (common in IR formulations).

T₉₀ (Time to 90% Dissolution)

  • Reflects completeness of drug release.

  • Used to ensure the majority of the drug has been delivered.

Max % Response

  • Indicates if complete drug release has occurred (100% expected in most tablets).

Disintegration Time

  • For uncoated tablets, marks when the dosage form physically breaks apart, aiding dissolution.

FAQ

Q1. What is the difference between disintegration and dissolution?
Disintegration is the breakup of the tablet into smaller pieces. Dissolution is the process by which the drug dissolves in solution.

Q2. Can I use this tool for capsules or modified release forms?
Yes, it works for any dosage form that releases drug over time. Choose ER template for extended-release comparisons.

Q3. How do I know if my curve is acceptable?
Compare your values to pharmacopoeial standards. For IR tablets, >80% dissolution in 30 minutes is generally acceptable.

Q4. Is the data saved after closing?
Currently, data is not saved in the browser. Export as PNG/PDF to store your session output.

Q5. Can I customize the calculation of T₅₀ or disintegration time?
Not yet, but future versions will allow you to set thresholds or use log-linear interpolation.
