What is the FPGEE?
The Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Equivalency Examination (FPGEE) is a certification exam administered by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP). It is the critical first step for foreign-educated pharmacists to gain licensure in the United States. The exam assesses whether your pharmaceutical education is equivalent to a US pharmacy degree (PharmD).
FPGEE Exam Pattern & Format
- Total Questions: 200 Questions.
- Format: Computer-Based Test (CBT).
- Duration: 4.5 Hours (approx. 270 minutes).
- Passing Score: A scaled score of 75 or higher.
Detailed Syllabus Breakdown

1. Foundational Biomedical Sciences (10%)
This section tests your grasp of the basic sciences that underpin pharmacy. Key topics include molecular biology, genetics, anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry.
2. Pharmaceutical Sciences (33%)
This is a high-yield section. You must master Medicinal Chemistry, Pharmacology, and Pharmaceutics. Crucially, this section includes Pharmacokinetics and sterile/non-sterile compounding (USP 797 and 795).
3. Social, Behavioral, and Administrative Sciences (22%)
Often overlooked by students, this section covers the US healthcare system, Pharmacy Law, ethics, and professional communication. It also includes Biostatistics and clinical trial design.
4. Pharmacy Practice and Clinical Sciences (35%)
The largest section of the exam. This tests your ability to apply knowledge to patient care. Focus on Therapeutics (guideline-based treatment), medication safety, and patient counseling.
